About Nazira

Nazira is a beautiful town located in the Sibsagar district of Assam. It has an area of 8 sq km with a density of 1630.9 inch per sq kms. Nazira is located on the banks of the Dikhow River around 18 kms from Sibsagar town.

History of Nazira

Nazira was an important place during the Ahom regime. Nazira is located near Gargaon, which was the capital of the Ahom kingdom. According to legendary sources, Nazira got its name from ‘Now-Jeera’ which in Assamese means the resting place of boats. As it was near the kingdom capital and in vicinity of the Dikhow River, the boats journeying through the river used to take rest in this place. The Kareng Ghar built by King Rajeshwar Singha stands as an epitome of the legacy and rule of Ahom kingdom.

During the British rule, tea plantations started in Nazira and Upper Assam and officers club like the ONGCL was built for the employees. Nazira was one of the disturbed places of Assam due to the active presence of the terrorist outfit ULFA. The Government deployed heavy paramilitary, Army and CISF personnel for maintaining peace and order in the region.

Demography of Nazira

According to the 2001 census, Nazira had a population of 12,466. The average literacy rate is 81% and the population percentage of males to females is 53% to 47%. The population of Nazira mainly consists of Ahoms, Assamese Muslims, Brahmins, Koch, Deories etc. there are also a certain population of tea tribe community.

Economy of Nazira

Nazira is rich in oil and gas resources. The ONGC has its main operation office here where from it operates the major oil rigs and production platforms for E&P exploration. There are also a number of multinational companies located at Nazira. Tea plantation and agriculture are other income sources.

Nazira is itself a beauty bestowed by the Gods. Tucked away in Sibsagar district, there are lush greenery hills and forests in Nazira. In addition to this, the tea gardens and streams attract the sight of the viewer.
